Tell Me About Yourself

The Question

"Tell me about yourself" is often the first question in any interview. It sets the tone for the entire conversation.

Why They Ask

Interviewers want to see how you communicate, what you prioritize, and whether your background aligns with the role. It's also a warm-up to ease into the conversation.

Framework

Use the Present-Past-Future structure:

  1. Present — What you're doing now (role, key responsibilities)
  2. Past — Relevant experience that led you here
  3. Future — Why you're excited about this opportunity

Example Answer

"I'm currently a frontend engineer at Acme Corp, where I lead the design system team and build React components used across 12 product teams. Before that, I spent three years at a startup where I built their customer-facing dashboard from scratch, which grew to serve 50K daily active users. I'm excited about this role because I want to work on more complex, large-scale frontend challenges, and your team's focus on performance and accessibility really resonates with me."

Key Takeaway

Keep it under 2 minutes. Be specific, tell a story, and connect your experience to why you're a great fit for this particular role.
